How to reset a domain Administrator password in Win2kJohn M. Simpson came up with this creative method to reset the Administrator password in a Windows 2000 domain. Please visit the link for complete details. NOTE: For good or ill, the pages of John's site are inaccessible if you are using Internet Explorer. Attempt to open one of his pages in IE to read an explanation why. If you do not have access to another browser, you can try this link to the most recent version of his page from the Google cache. His method requires local Administrator access to the Domain Controller. Note that this is the same as the "Directory Services Restore Mode" Administrator password, which is different than the domain Administrator account. If you do not have the local Administrator password, you can change it using this TechByte on changing the local Administrator password as long as you have physical access to the system. The essence of the procedure involves invoking cmd.exe as the default screen saver by making registry changes in Directory Services Restore mode. This method will NOT work for Windows 2003 servers due to improved security. Please see the services recovery method for Windows 2003 Domain Controllers outlined in this Techbyte. We have successfully used John's recovery method on at least one occasion.
