How to determine where a user is logged on

Here are some suggested ways to determine where a user account is logged in:

- Use SysInternals free PsLoggedOn utility, part of the incredibly useful PsTools freeware utility suite. Running psloggedon username will scan all computers on the network and return a list of all systems on which account username is accessing resources locally or remotely.

- If you know which server the user is accessing, open the Computer Management console, expand Shared Folders, and click Sessions. A list of all systems and users accessing resources on the server will be displayed.

Is there anyway to show which users wee logged in at a given time in the past. For example, a backup was unsuccessful because, a user was logged in using the files. Is there a way of showing who this user was?

You're not going to be able to go "back in time" to view that info unless you have file auditing turned on and are prepared to sift through the logs. One solution might be to run "psfile" on the file server before the backup job runs. This would list any open files and which user has them open.
