Display folder size in Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer can show file size, but can only show the total space used by files and subfolders in a given folder by viewing the Properties of that folder. An extremely useful free Windows utility is Folder Size for Windows. This shell extension will add another column to the Windows Explorer detail view which displays the folder size of that folder.

The utility will take a little time to calculate the folder size on first run, but maintains fairly accurate counts once the folder sizes are cached. It is very helpful for tracking down the source of large amounts of disk space utilization at a glance!

Simply download the file from the link above (approx. 240k), install it, and close and re-open any open Windows Explorer windows. Switch to Details view, right-click on the column headers and check the Folder Size column. You can turn on Folder Size for all of your Explorer windows by enabling it in one window, then clicking Tools, Folder Options..., View tab, and clicking the Like Current Folder button. Note that this will reset the view of all of your folders, which may not be desirable if you have custom folders views set.
