Browsing is extremely slow while connected to VPN

When using a Windows-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection you may find that web browsing or other network activity slows dramatically. One cause of this is if the default gateway on the remote network is being using instead of the local default gateway. In this case all traffic destined for a non-local host passes across the tunnel to the remote site and out through its default gateway. Overhead due to encryption, a slower Internet connection at the remote location, or other network traffic can all contribute to noticeably slower network performance.

This option is enabled by default for all new VPN connections, but is only required if resources which are not on the same subnet as the RRAS server will be accessed through the VPN.

To disable it:

- Right-click on the VPN connection icon and choose Properties.
- Click the Networking tab.
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
and then click the Properties button.
- Click the Advanced butotn.
- Un-check the Use default gateway on remote network checkbox.
