How to Remove a Windows Service Pack via Recovery Console

A Windows Service Pack can be removed via Recovery Console in the event of a problem which prevents boot after installation. This will only work if this is the first time this service pack has been installed and the "keep uninstall files" option was selected during install.

Run commands in bold.

- Boot from the Windows CD.
- Choose Repair/Recovery Console from the menu.
- Choose the appropriate installation.
- Login using the local Administrator password.
- cd \$ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst
- batch spuninst.txt
- exit

If explorer.exe does not run on reboot (i.e. the desktop does not load), follow these steps:
- Restart into Safe Mode.
- Use CTRL+ALT+DEL to start Task Manager.
- Click File then New Task (Run...).
- regedit
- Browse to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs
- Modify the ObjectName value to "LocalSystem"
- Reboot again.
