Viewing EPS files in The GIMP

The GIMP lists Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files among its supported file types, however attempting to open an EPS file will result in the messages:

  • Error starting ghostscript: Failed to execute child process (No such file or directory)
  • Could not interpret 'filename'
  • Opening 'filename' failed: Plug-In could not open image

To resolve this you must first install GhostScript, which is a PostScript interpreter downloadable here. After installing, copy the GhostScript executables (gswin32.exe and gswin32c.exe on Windows) from the GhostScript installation's bin folder to GIMP's bin folder. Attempt to open the EPS file again and it will convert and load the image into GIMP.
