How to create an EPS file from Windows

Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files are easily generated from any Windows application. This file format is frequently requested as a graphics format by graphics designers and printers.

To generate an EPS file:

  • Install a Postscript printer driver on your PC. We recommend the Adobe Universal PostScript Windows Driver.
  • Through the Adobe driver installation (or manually using the Add Printer Wizard if using a different driver), create a new local printer (this requires local Administrator rights).
  • Choose the FILE: port to create a file.
  • Do not share the printer or print a test page.
  • After the printer is created, open the Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes window.
  • Find the newly created PostScript printer and rename it to EPS Printer or a similarly suitable name.
  • Right-click on the printer and choose Properties.
  • Click the Printing Preferences button.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • Expand the PostScript Options branch. Next to PostScript Output Option choose Encapsulated PostScript (EPS).
  • Press OK on each window to close it.

To generate the EPS file, simply choose the EPS Printer as your print source. You will be prompted for a filename and the file will be created automatically. Note that this does not create an EPS file with a built-in preview image so most common graphics viewers will be unable to display the file. High-end graphics packages which natively support EPS should be able to read the file without issue.
